Stories of Resilience: Rebuilding Communities in Northern Sri Lanka

In the face of adversity, the people of Northern Sri Lanka have shown incredible resilience, overcoming the challenges of war, economic hardship, and natural disasters. Through initiatives like those led by OASIS, communities have started to rebuild their lives, not just physically but emotionally as well.

OASIS’s work in the Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts has been instrumental in restoring hope. The housing projects, which have built and renovated homes for over 20families, represent not just physical infrastructure, but the emotional and psychological rebuilding of communities that have suffered for decades. These homes provide a foundation for families to heal and rebuild their lives, giving them the stability to look toward a brighter future.

In addition to housing, the livelihood support projects have had a profound effect. Widows, single mothers, and marginalized families now have the opportunity to become self-sufficient through programs like poultry farming and small-scale agriculture. The resilience of these individuals, combined with the support of OASIS, has enabled them to take control of their futures, demonstrating the power of community-driven development.

The stories of the families who have benefited from these projects—such as a widow with three children who now earns Rs. 21,000 a month from poultry farming—highlight the power of resilience in the face of adversity and the long-lasting impact of community-led initiatives.
