Transforming Lives Through Sustainable Housing Initiatives

In Sri Lanka, where the aftermath of natural disasters and ongoing economic crises have left many vulnerable communities in dire need, housing remains a fundamental need. The housing initiative implemented by OASIS in collaboration with partners such as Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka has played a crucial role in improving the living conditions of marginalized families. This initiative aims to provide safe, sturdy, and dignified housing for those who have been left behind by larger national development programs.

In the Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts, OASIS has successfully built 14 new homes and completed the construction of 13 partially built houses. These homes have provided families with a sense of security and a foundation from which they canre build their lives. The beneficiaries, including widows, fishermen, and daily wage earners, were carefully selected based on their needs, with each family receiving homes tailored to their specific requirements.

Through generous funding from the Truth to Power Foundation, these homes were built to ensure not only the provision of shelter but also a long-term, sustainable environment for these families. The new homes include 2-room houses with essential amenities such as a kitchen, bathroom, and living space, allowing families to live with greater dignity and security. Additionally, a community center and other vital community facilities have been established to support the wellbeing of the wider community.

This initiative demonstrates how providing basic housing can transform the lives of those affected by poverty, conflict, and natural disasters. By ensuring that families have stable homes, OASIS helps to create a foundation for sustainable development and improved quality of life.
